Windows 11 - the latest Windows operating system
Originally, Microsoft didn't intend to develop and publish Windows 11 - in fact, the company wanted Windows 10 to be it's last and final operating system. Instead of creating a new release, Windows 10 was supposed to turn into a Software as a Service model, with continuous development and new features. In 2021, however, Microsoft released Windows 11 and announced an end to Windows 10 support in October 2025.
Windows 11 features a range of new functions and improvements, including a redesigned Start Menu that removes the Live Tiles function introduced in Windows 8 and revamped in Windows 10. Instead of Live Tiles, a separate widgets panel is now present on the taskbar. Many new gaming technologies were also introduced, previously only available on consoles like Xbox Series X and S, including Auto HDR and DirectStorage.
Internet Explorer - the browser that everyone hates and makes jokes about - has been finally put to rest, with Microsoft Edge fully taking over as the default web browser. Microsoft Teams
was also integrated into the operating system, now being an official part of Windows 11.
Windows 11 hardware requirements
One of the biggest points of contention of Windows 11 isits hardware requirements. The basic system requirements of Windows 11 are much higher than Windows 10 - for example, Windows 11 no longer offers a 32-bit version of the system, which means that PCs with old architecture CPUs won't be able to install Windows 11. The minimum RAM and storage requirements were also heavily increased, as Windows 11 now requires a minimum of 4 GB of RAM and at least 64 GB of free storage space.
What prevented many Windows 10 users from upgrading to Windows 11 was the requirement for Trusted Platform Module version 2.0. TPM is an international standard for secure hardware controllers, and its 2.0 version introduces many algorithmic additions and new commands, as well as a rework of the entire architecture. Unfortunately, this means that all motherboards that do not have TPM support will not be compatible with Windows 11, leading to confusion among users and hardware manufacturers alike. Even some modern motherboards that have support for TPM have that option disabled by default, requiring advanced computer knowledge to enable it before the user is able to install Windows 11.
Is it worth upgrading to Windows 11?
Going forward, Windows 11 will sooner or later supersede Windows 10 as the go-to operating system for PCs. After Windows 10 loses support in 2025, it will no longer receive crucial security updates, necessary for browsing the Internet safely. As such, users will need third-party cybersecurity solutions such as additional anti-malware and antivirus software.
There are also many additions to Windows 11 that users like. Screen sharing was made infinitely more comfortable to do without third-party applications, and the addition of Android apps means that users can now enjoy many applications previously only available for mobile devices on their PCs. With the latest updates, the new Windows Media Player app is finally becoming popular again - in Windows 10, many users opted for third-party alternatives like VLC or Media Player Classic, since the native Windows Media Player was cumbersome and lacked features.
